SEYA Programs
Middle School Program

The Middle School program at Southeast Youth Academy has three main components: Tutoring, Enrichment and Homework Assistance. Every participant receives tutoring by our Title 1 Supplemental Services Provider Education Station, with a volunteer tutor, or with SEYA staff members. The focus of the tutoring time may be in skill building, remediation or reinforcement of lessons taught during the school day. Enrichment Activities in the 21st Century Community Learning Center at SEYA are organized in four clubs that meet on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

Health and Fitness – Two days of the week members of this club go to the Canton location of Merritt Athletic Clubs where they develop their bodies and minds through martial arts and sports training. Participants learn and practice formations and combinations. In addition to the martial arts training, youth also participate in recreational activities such as swimming, basketball, volleyball and sport agility training. Through a partnership with Johns Hopkins University, the members of this club participate in once-a-week nutrition and cooking classes that teach the fundamentals of eating healthy including food selection and preparation.

Arts and Culture – Twice during the week, members of this club take art lessons through the Creative Alliance. These classes incorporate reading and self-expression to create paintings, sculptures, jewelry and other works of art. On another day each week, the International School of Protocol meets with participants to build social skills such as dining etiquette and public speaking.

Performing Arts – In partnership with Dance N Motion, participants learn creative movement and technical elements to modern, hip-hop and inspirational dance. These lessons include elements of choreography, journaling and healthy living through nutrition and physical activity. Members in this club also take ballroom dance lessons including salsa.

Business and Technology – In partnership with Bee Trained, members of this club learn computer skills in classes twice a week. Lessons focus on using the computer as an education and entrepreneurial resource. Typing, internet research and Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Publisher and Power Point) are some of the content areas of the lessons. Once a week, members meet for the young entrepreneurs program. Victorious Attitudes provides lessons on business etiquette while implementing the “Be the E” curriculum provided by 4-H.

SEYA staff and volunteers assist participants in the completion of home assignments and projects from school. Members access reference materials, use computers, and internet resources daily. When formal homework is not assigned, members are required to participate in academically enriching activities such as current events and debate, Educational Board Games, Classroom Jeopardy and many more. Every week we go on field trips designed to provide additional opportunities for learning, culture, teambuilding and fun. Destinations and activities may be academically focused such as the Boat Rides with Living Classrooms and SciTech at the University of Maryland, or culturally enriching such as the Jewish Museum of Maryland and Douglass-Myers Museum. We will also take a fun field trip every month that will be chosen by the young people.
